Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s outrage about a “disgusting” painting at the Brooklyn Museum in 1999 first called my attention to CHRIS OFILI‘s work. Pornography, elephant dung juxtaposed with the Virgin Mary seemed enough reason for an outing to Brooklyn at the time. What I discovered then was an artist not afraid to celebrate the sacred with the profane, an artist who’s vibrant and elaborate artworks seduced me with glittery, psychedelic surfaces and provocative imagery. Fifteen years later, the New Museum New York will present the first major solo exhibition in the United States of artist Chris Ofili’s work. The exhibition will feature over thirty of his paintings, a large selection of drawings, and a number of sculptures from over the course of his twenty-year career.
